  • Depreciation of business equipment – including Section 179 and bonus depreciation

Frequently Asked Questions:
Small Business Taxes

The Augusta Rule (IRS Section 280A(g)) lets you rent your personal home to your business for up to 14 days per year. Your business deducts the rent, and you receive the income tax-free. Documentation matters – we provide the rental agreement and help you set a defensible market rate.

Once your net profit is consistently $50,000 or more per year, it is a good idea to consider electing to be taxed as an S-Corp. An S-Corp election can reduce self-employment tax and save you tens of thousands of dollars. If you decide to be taxed as an S-Corp, it does add payroll and accounting expenses, so we run the numbers first to confirm the savings outweigh the costs.

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in tax for the year, the IRS generally requires quarterly estimated payments due in April, June, September, and January. We calculate your estimates so you avoid underpayment penalties without giving the IRS an interest-free loan.

Ordinary and necessary business expenses are deductible – equipment, software, advertising, business mileage, insurance, contract labor, professional fees, business meals (generally 50%), and a properly documented home office or work vehicle. We provide a free business expense worksheet so nothing is missed.

As an Enrolled Agent firm, we can represent you before the IRS. Our founder literally wrote a book on IRS audit flags, and we prepare every return with audit avoidance in mind. If a notice arrives, we handle the response – and if it grows into back taxes or a collection issue.

Business returns are priced by revenue and complexity, and we always provide a price range upfront – no surprises. We usually add $300-$500 to your personal tax return if you are an LLC or a sole proprietor. If you have an LLC taxed as an S-Corp, or a Partnership or Corporation, that is a separate tax return starting at $800. See our Transparent Pricing page for the full pricing guide.
